March Is the Sweetest Time of the Year!

When the nights are cold and the days are warm, Vermont maple producers across the state know sugaring season is upon us. This is a perfect time of year to visit the Green Mountain State.  Not only can you participate in spring skiing and boarding, but you can indulge in the vast variety of the best maple products in the country. For a quick weekend get-away or a week-long ski trip, it isn’t too late to enjoy Vermont’s winter wonderland, visit a sugar house, buy some maple syrup, and bring a small piece of Vermont home with you. For information on upcoming events, festivals, and maple history, visit vermontmaple.org.

Vermont generates 49.5% of the country’s maple syrup ands produces over 2.07 million gallons of syrup. That’s coming from more than 3,000 sugar houses statewide with more than 6 million trees tapped. Generally, it takes 40 gallons of say to make one gallon of maple syrup.  Our exclusive maple syrup producer for the Inn is Justin Turco and his Cross Road Sugar Company in Ira, Vermont.

Here are our favorite sugar houses you may visit near the inn. Many host “sugar on snow” parties March and April.

  • Morse Farm: Sugar on Snow at the Morse Farm is a Vermont tradition! Sugar on Snow is served every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in March. Enjoy their 100% pure Vermont maple syrup boiled to a soft ball stage and poured over shaved ice. A sweet maple taffy will form as the hot syrup meets the coldness. You’ll sink your fork in and enjoy the sticky sweetness! Enjoy a dill pickle to offset the sweetness and a raised donut to soak up the extra syrup. For more information, visit morsefarm.com
  • Sugar & Spice: About 5 minutes down the road from the Inn, Sugar & Spice restaurant and sugar house is a historic family run business overflowing with Vermont charm and character. For a close up look, watch them ‘boil’ the sap to make maple syrup on a tour of the sugaring area and perhaps chat with the sugarmaker. They also serve breakfast and dinner and have a wonderful gift shop with an array of maple products and Vermont goodies. For more information, visit vtsugarandspice.com.
  • Baird Family Farm: This scenic Vermont hill farm located minutes from The Inn, in Chittenden, is the perfect spot to go buy your maple syrup and enjoy the scenery. They have a sales room where they offer free tastings of maple syrup as well as other maple products for sale. For more information, visit bairdfarm.com.
  • Sugarbush Farm: Sugarbush Farm is located on a 550 acre hilltop outside of Woodstock Village.
